Astigmatism Correction

Astigmatism is an optical defect (also called refractive error), whereby vision is blurred due to irregular curvature of the cornea or lens. Astigmatism occurs when the cornea is irregularly shaped - like a football or a teaspoon - preventing light from converging on the retina. Parts of the image may focus on the retina, while others focus behind it or in front of it. This has the effect of bending light inconsistently and causing blurred or distorted images. Astigmatism can occur alone or in addition to either nearsightedness or farsightedness.

Astigmatism is a very common vision condition. Most people have some degree of astigmatism. Slight amounts of astigmatism usually don't affect vision and don't require treatment. However, larger amounts cause distorted or blurred vision, eye discomfort and headaches. Almost all degrees of astigmatism can be corrected with properly prescribed eyeglasses, contact lenses or by performing a refractive procedure (laser correction). Various considerations involving ocular health, refractive status, and lifestyle frequently determine whether one option may be better than another. Although astigmatism can complicate refractive surgery, it can be effectively corrected with LASIK, PRK or LRI (limbal relaxing incisions) as it shows on the chart below. LRI is usually done at the same time as cataract surgery.

Dr. Kagan can diagnose astigmatism by a thorough eye exam. Astigmatism may be corrected along with other refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) at the same time.

Refractive surgery requires healthy eyes that are free from retinal problems, corneal scars and any eye disease. As technology progresses, it is becoming more and more important that you explore all options and possibilities before deciding which refractive procedure and treatment is right for you.
